Unleashing creative energy
“I learned how to express personality in my choreography and how to take movement and give it purpose.”
– Young Choreographers Lab Participant
The Young Choreographer’s Lab is for teens interested in pursuing their artistic vision as choreographers as well as dancers! The lab component is designed for young artists to investigate themselves as artists, learning choreography tools and concepts through short movement studies. In the fall, up to 20 young artists meet once a week, for eight weeks for choreography workshops and in the spring selected choreographers create a larger work—all under the mentorship of leading Seattle choreographers. In 2009-2010 two Young Choreographer works were selected to be performed in STG’s DANCE This and Global Dance Party at The Paramount and Moore Theatres.
Participants have the opportunity to…
- Learn choreography tools from leading Seattle choreographers
- Create movement and composition ideas
- Work with choreographer mentors
- Develop individual/group choreography through a collaborative process
- Present work at an informal showing for friends and family
- Gain experience in choreography by giving/receiving constructive feedback
- Receive tickets to selected dance performances at The Paramount and Moore Theatres to expand choreographic perspectives
- Write a proposal to create a larger project with professional mentorship in the spring.
PROFESSIONAL TEACHING ARTISTS teach weekly workshops. 2009-2010 instructors include renowned choreographers Amy O’Neal (lead instructor), KT Niehoff, Kirsten Cooper, Sonia Dawkins, Mark Haim and Gregory Maqoma.
