The Young Choreographer’s Lab is for young dancers, ages 14 - 20, interested in pursuing their artistic visions as choreographers. Participants have the opportunity to investigate themselves as artists, learning choreography tools and concepts through short movement studies. Each Fall, up to 25 diverse dancers are selected for the program that meets each Saturday for eight weeks in the heart of Capitol Hill. In the Winter and Spring selected participants create a larger work—all under the mentorship of leading Seattle choreographers. ALL DANCE BACKGROUNDS & STYLES OF DANCERS ENCOURAGED TO APPLY!
Instructors have included renowned choreographers: Donald Byrd (Spectrum Dance), Kirsten Cooper (Westlake), Sonia Dawkins (SD/Prism), Anne Gilbert (Creative Dance Center), Mark Haim (independent), Patricia Lent (Merce Cunningham Dance Company), Gregory Maqoma (South African guest artist), KT Niehoff (lingo) and Amy O’Neal (lead mentor/choreographer).
Young Choreographers will:
- Learn choreography tools from leading Seattle choreographers as mentors.
- Explore movement and composition concepts.
- Develop individual & group choreography through a collaborative process.
- Present work at an informal showing for friends and family.
- Gain experience giving & receiving constructive feedback.
- Receive tickets to selected dance performances at The Paramount and Moore Theatres.
- Write a proposal to create a larger project with professional mentorship in the winter/spring 2012.
- Be considered to present choreography in DANCE This at The Moore Theatre.

YOUNG CHOREOGRAPHER’S LAB – PROJECT AUDITIONS
Young Dancer Audition (Age 14-22; Registration Required)
January 21, 2012, 3-5 pm (sign-in at 2:30 pm)
Velocity Dance Center (1621 12th Ave, Seattle 98122)
STG is seeking young dancers with intermediate to advanced technique (jazz, hip hop, modern and/or ballet) to perform in teen choreographer works—with mentorship by leading Seattle choreographers. Commitment includes:
• Rehearsals at Velocity: Jan 28 – April 28 (Saturdays 2:30-4:10 OR 4:20-6 pm)
• Performance at Velocity: May 5 (Tech 2-4:45 pm, Performance 5-6 pm)
• Potential opportunity to perform in DANCE This on July 12-14, 2012 at The Moore Theatre
• Audition is FREE. Selected dancers will have a participation fee of $25/piece.
