“Oresteia Ubuntu” (roughly translated: “Oresteia of Humanity”) is an original adaptation of many South African and United States historical sources, incorporating music, movement, and performance masks, and all based around Aeschylus’ 2500-year-old Greek trilogy, The Oresteia. However, this multi-disciplinary performance will not be a history lesson. In fact, artists from Tribes Project and African Tree Productions take a decidedly collaborative and introspective approach throughout their rehearsal and development process, promising a fluid piece that is emotionally real & dynamic. Delivered during 2014, the 20th anniversary year of the fall of apartheid, this is an honest, multi-cultural, exploration into the darkest corners of human cruelty and the difficult journey to reach forgiveness and compassion.
Tribes Project and African Tree Productions (formerly Soweto Youth Drama Society) have previously worked together on a joint production that performed at the UN World Conference Against Racism in Durban South Africa. Both groups strive to push the boundaries of our perspectives on race, identity, and social justice - through the performing arts.
