Evan Flory-Barnes - The Music of Acknowledgement of a Celebration: Inheritance, Authenticity and Healing
In 2008, Seattle-based bassist/composer Evan Flory-Barnes was awarded a commission from Meet the Composer to compose an original work called An Acknowledgement of a Celebration: Inheritance, Authenticity and Healing. Acknowledgement is a 9 movements cycle orchestral music which integrates elements of early 20th century classical of Debussy, Ravel and Stravinsky with "true-school" boom bap, hip-hop of A Tribe Called Quest, Pete Rock and DJ Premier.
Bassist and composer, Evan Flory-Barnes, is a Seattle Native, who has been composing and performing music since he attended Garfield High School. While attending Garfield, Evan was a member of its award winning symphony orchestra and performing with the hip-hop group Maroon Colony.
For the past 15 years Flory-Barnes has been played bass and composed music with a wide variety of artists, in Seattle and abroad, across the musical spectrum. From classic soul to experimental free-improvisation, from Son Jarrocho to Hard Bop, Evan brings a demonstrative passion, joy, presence and distinct virtuosity to every endeavor.
Flory-Barnes is a member genre/expectation defying Seattle Supergroup Industrial Revelation. This 2014 Stranger Genius Award winning band, features four of Seattle's most in demand, distinct and creative voices in Ahamefule J. Oluo, D'Vonne Lewis and Josh Rawlings. 12 years and several albums in, the band is beginning to rouse souls and melt-faces internationally.
Flory-Barnes is purposeful in his resolve to use his music to remove the barriers imposed on music, humanity and society – no genres. His vision is to create music that reflects beauty; stirs the emotions; and, enlightens the soul.
