THE MOORE THEATRE > Forever Moore
Built in 1907, The Moore is Seattle’s oldest operating theatre and as much a part of Seattle's history as the Denny Regrade, salmon runs and Starbucks. History has been made at The Moore, and in 2013, its future got brighter.
WHAT CHANGED?
In July 2013, STG closed The Moore Theatre for two months in order to give it a much-needed facelift including:
- Upgrading or replacing all 1,800 seats - including additional leg room on the main floor!
- Painting the entire theatre and lobby - for the first time ever we can see the names of the Muses in the lobby.
- Improving the heat system – that’s good for artists and audiences alike.
- Installing a curtain system – The Moore can now be temporarily transformed from its current 1,800-seat capacity to a 400-seat space that appropriately accommodates more intimate productions.
And on September 27, 2013, the doors swung open to a renewed space with a performance by American music legend, Mavis Staples!
As David Allen our Chief Operating Officer mentioned at the re-opening of The Moore, taking care of historic theatres is a labor of love and the work continues. Please help us continue to care for The Moore. Any contributed amount makes a big difference.
INVESTING IN OUR COMMUNITY
The revitalization of The Moore Theatre was part of STG’s collaborative stewardship of historic theatres for the next generation of artists and audiences.
Maintaining a healthy environment for artists, where they can learn, grow and work is of quantifiable significance in our region. The Moore Theatre is at the hub of STG’s education and artist development programs, providing a space where young performers are trained and can try something new. These young artists will continue to hone their craft and become the next generation of performers, teachers and mentors, making their contributions and sustaining a healthy cultural climate.
