Audio Described Performances
Arrival
Anyone in your party can ask the ushers and security stationed outside (staff dressed in black) for guidance to the designated accessible entrance of the Paramount Theatre, located on Pine Street at the intersection with 9th Avenue. Front doors open one hour prior to showtime.
To enter, you’ll go through a metal detector (first doorway) then your ticket barcodes will be scanned (second doorway). Immediately inside those two doorways, you’ll find the table where volunteers are ready to equip you with a headset for audio description. They will ask for your name, photo ID, and phone number in exchange for the headset device.
Equipment
For audio description, please confirm with the volunteers that your device is set to Channel 2 and learn how to control the volume and change the channel, just in case.
- Note: you won’t hear the audio description narration unless you’re on Channel 2.
- Channel 1 amplifies the stage performers.
- Channels 3-6 are unused and therefore won’t produce sound.
We provide two headset options, and you are welcome to bring your own plug-in earphones for the latter. You’re also welcome to try both and switch if you find one more comfortable than the other.
- Option A: a U-shaped device that hangs from the contact point with your ears. Recommended for better sound quality.
- Option B: a smaller, more portable device with a headphone jack. While the sound is better through your own earphones, we provide disposable earbuds if you forget to bring yours. Overall, the audio description tends to be harder to hear on this device, and we’re actively working on a solution to that issue.
After the performance, please return the headset(s) to the same entryway table, or the adjacent booth, and retrieve your photo ID from a volunteer.
Preshow Description
The auditorium will open for patron seating about 30 minutes prior to showtime.
The audio description preshow notes with costume, cast, and scenery details will begin approximately 15-18 minutes before showtime via Channel 2.
Restrooms
The two ADA restroom stalls are located forward and to the left at the far end of the theatre lobby from the entryway check-in table. You’ll find them situated under the staircase that’s near the auditorium Aisle 5 doorway on the main lobby floor.
A water fountain is a few steps away from the ADA restroom stall doors.
